This is definitely the most ‘sour cherry’ Nero we make - the classic tasting note for the variety - but there is a jubey, green edge to it. Think Shiso Leaf. We’re really getting used to this vineyard and in our fourth year of making it, we’ve hit our straps. A beautifully balanced acidity, the structure is super fine-grained and slatey. Ripe, primary fruit, with racy acid and pure red and blue fruits. It’s on song this year. It has an uber addictive raspberry core, with ripples of blueberry and bright red apple. There is a real rocky, mineral acidity that’s a bit new for this wine, but it’s a lovely complexing character. It has some almost lemongrass-y hits too. Love the development of these vines now, after being grafted in 2016 and it should evolve really nicely in bottle. It’s bang-on this year, and as always it looks just that little bit Gamay-esque, almost Cru Beaujolais. Really lovely sweet nutmeg and baking spice aromatics, with a woody, cedary undercurrent, backed up by these bright punchy blue and brambly black fruits. Great mineral drive this year, salty acid line framed by crispy tannins. A bit of meaty chew to it - how nice! As always, chill it down - it’ll be great with charcuterie this year or even pepperoni pizza! There have been agreements between landholders since the 50s about the use and direction of river flood water. The soils can take a full 40-50cm of flood water only to have it all soak in within 36 hours to replenish the subsoil and provide the grower with enough soils moisture to get the vines through the entire season without the need to take water from the Murray pipeline. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e It speaks to what we're about - sustainable usage of water, and we love the soil profile here, which has led to the name \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDelta Blue\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e.\u003c\/strong\u003e (Also, we have to mention the double reference in the name of this wine for our big love of the blues of another famous \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDelta\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e - the Mississippi)\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe soils here have been formed from the mighty Murray River meeting the sea for thousands of years, which over time have formed a diverse range of alluvial clays that litter the region. Where we find the Old Mill Estate, is based on a thick bed of dense, red clay loam, \u003cstrong\u003ewhere some stunning Touriga Nacional and Cabernet(s) are grown\u003c\/strong\u003e. The moderate climate, with a great deal of maritime influence, is as climatically suited to these varieties as it almost gets in Australia. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWith that in mind, do not expect this to be a \u003cem\u003ebig old bold wine with a body like a semi-trailer\u003c\/em\u003e - \u003cstrong\u003ethis is still a classic Unico Zelo wine\u003c\/strong\u003e with freshness, and that juicy core, but it's backed up by a lovely, subtle suede tannin.
